I popped up to the new Auckland Shooting Club on the weekend to check out one of their new regular competitions – IPSC Mini.
IPSC Mini is well, IPSC Rifle with .22 calibre guns.
That basically means, it’s fast, it’s close and it’s very cheap to compete in!
I noticed there was a good mix of both experienced competition shooters and new shooters involved – a great opportunity for the old-hats to practice in a much cheaper format and an even better opportunity for new shooters to develop their safe firearms handling skills before adding in the centerfire calibres as well.
I had a little gaff in the first stage, as I didn’t really plan on shooting the comp – however, I was signed up and added to the squad and told to get my gun – who am I to say no to shooting! – anyhow, the first stage, the buzzer goes off and I bring the rifle up to my eye – and see a big black hole where my sight picture should be! No, I managed to take the scope covers off, but I had left the scope set to 7x – which – for shooting a target about 10 meters away – was a bit much – I can see this discipline being ideal for a red dot type optic – or even iron sights!
This is a great discipline that I can see going far in NZ, I will certainly be heading up to the next one!
